Everyone should be able to use this website, regardless of ability or the device they use.

Our commitment

Maine Pretrial Services aims to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 Level AA. Accessibility is part of how we design and review this site, not an afterthought.

ADA statement

Maine Pretrial Services is committed to providing equal access to all individuals, including those with disabilities. We make reasonable modifications to our policies and practices when needed so that people with disabilities can access our services, programs, and information. If you need an auxiliary aid or service, or another reasonable modification, contact us and we will work with you to meet your needs.

What we do

  • Semantic headings and landmarks, plus a skip-to-content link on every page.
  • Text and interface colors checked against AA contrast requirements.
  • Visible keyboard focus styles and full keyboard operability of menus and forms.
  • Descriptive alternative text for meaningful images.
  • Labels and clear error messages on every form field.
  • Layouts that reflow without horizontal scrolling down to small phone widths.

Known limitations

Some documents and forms hosted by partner organizations or state agencies are outside our control and may not meet the same standard. If you encounter one, contact us and we will help you get the information another way.

Request help or report a barrier

Email Info@mainepretrial.org with the page address and a short description of the problem. We respond to accessibility requests as a priority and will provide the information in an alternative format on request.

How we test

We evaluate this site against WCAG 2.2 Level A and AA using automated scanning, manual keyboard testing, and assistive-technology validation.

Scope and environments

  • Target standard: WCAG 2.2 Level A and AA.
  • Tested viewports: desktop (1440×900), tablet (768×1024), and mobile (375×812).
  • Browsers: current Chrome, Safari, and Firefox.

Automated testing

We run axe-core through Playwright across every public route during our build process. This catches programmatic failures such as color contrast, missing labels, image alt text, and heading hierarchy.

Manual testing and assistive technologies

  • Keyboard navigation: the entire site is operable using only Tab, Shift+Tab, Enter, Space, and Arrow keys. Modal dialogs trap and restore focus correctly.
  • Screen readers: representative flows are tested with VoiceOver (macOS and iOS) and NVDA (Windows).
  • Zoom and reflow: layouts remain usable at 200% and 400% browser zoom without horizontal scrolling.
  • Reduced motion: all CSS animations and JavaScript transitions respect prefers-reduced-motion.

  1. August 2026

    Site-wide WCAG 2.2 AA review

    WCAG 2.2 success criteria: 1.4.3, 1.4.11, 2.4.7, 2.5.8, 2.3.3

    • Reviewed every page against WCAG 2.2 Level AA using automated and manual testing; no outstanding automated issues remain.
    • Adjusted teal and white text colors used on dark and light backgrounds so all text meets a 4.5:1 contrast ratio.
    • Added a visible keyboard focus outline to every link, button and form control, including navigation and card links.
    • Enlarged small links and icon buttons in the footer, header, location cards and forms so they are easier to tap.
    • Added support for the operating-system “reduce motion” setting, which turns off animations and smooth scrolling.
    • Confirmed pages reflow without side-to-side scrolling at 200% zoom and on small phone screens.

  2. August 2026

    Menus, forms and screen-reader support

    WCAG 2.2 success criteria: 1.3.1, 2.1.1, 3.3.1, 3.3.2, 4.1.2

    • The mobile menu now opens with keyboard focus inside it, keeps focus in the menu while open, closes with the Escape key or by tapping outside, and returns focus to the menu button.
    • Corrected heading order on the Locations page so headings follow a logical sequence.
    • Every form field has a visible label, and errors are announced to screen readers with clear, specific wording.
    • Confirmation messages after sending the contact, volunteer and employment forms are announced to screen readers.
    • Reviewed alternative text on all photographs, certificates and logos; decorative images are hidden from screen readers.

    Images and page structure

    WCAG 2.2 success criteria: 1.1.1, 1.4.10, 2.4.1

    • Added a skip-to-content link and consistent page landmarks (header, navigation, main content, footer) on every page.
    • Header photographs now use responsive, modern image formats with focal-point cropping so important detail stays visible on mobile.
    • Added descriptive captions and alternative text to the accreditation and award imagery.
