In memoriam

Elizabeth Powell
Honoring 30 Years of Service
Beloved colleague and advocate · 30 years of service to Maine Pretrial Services
Elizabeth Powell, Director of Pretrial Services, left this earth on March 8, 2026, surrounded by family and loved ones. Ms. Powell dedicated almost three decades to the idea that all people deserve fair treatment, whether it be in detention, court or community. With a variety of experiences at MPS, including volunteer work, time as an intern, work in the treatment courts, and ultimately leading the Pretrial Services division, one thing remained constant---Elizabeth's dedication to professional training and development. Elizabeth Powell was the only person we knew who used her vacation time to attend national and international training conferences. She understood the value of evidence- based practices and adherence to national standards. Before Elizabeth passed, we explored the possibility of a training scholarship in her name. She said she liked the idea, because she really wanted to stay with us and continue to do the things she cared about most in this world. She was a scholar and a teacher, a mentor and a trainer. The Elizabeth Powell Memorial Training Scholarship will be offered annually to agency staff, sending one, two or more people to the finest relevant training available. MPS commits to her legacy through this endowment. How fortunate we were to work with and learn from Elizabeth Powell. She will never be forgotten. If you would like to make a donation, we welcome your contribution. Maine Pretrial is a non-profit organization, so any donations are tax deductible.
